Dr. Kanegawa, a second-generation dentist, proudly continues the legacy established by his father, who founded Aiea’s first dental practice. A graduate of Temple University School of Dentistry, Dr. Kanegawa embodies the values of gentle, family-oriented dental care. Born and raised in Hawaii, his commitment to high achievement was evident from a young age, having achieved the prestigious rank of Eagle Scout at Troop 147 in Alvah Scott Elementary School.
Education played a pivotal role in Dr. Kanegawa’s journey. He is a graduate of Hanahauoli School, Punahou School, Carleton College in Northfield, Minnesota, and Temple University Dental School. Dentistry runs in his blood, with a lineage of esteemed dental professionals in his family. Notably, Dr. Howard K. Maesaka, the first graduate of Indiana University in Hawaii, initiated Wahiawa’s inaugural dental practice. Moreover, Dr. Gilbert T. Kanegawa, Dr. Jay’s father, established Aiea’s first dental practice. The lineage continues with Dr. Ray K. Maesaka, who devoted over four decades to teaching at Indiana Dental School, receiving an excellence in teaching award from Indiana University.
Dr. Kanegawa’s dedication to serving the community extends beyond his dental practice. He has served on the boards of various organizations, including the Association of Hanahauoli Alumni, where he held the position of former President. Additionally, he has contributed his expertise as Chairman of the Board for the Hawaii Dental Service (Delta Dental) and Chair of The New Dentist Committee and Health Committee of the Hawaii Dental Association. Dr. Kanegawa’s commitment to fostering community development also led him to participate in Kick Start Hawaii.
While dentistry is his passion, Dr. Kanegawa has a diverse range of interests. As an avid foodie, he brings his culinary expertise from working at Williams Sonoma for over 14 years. When he’s not perfecting his cooking skills, you’ll find him pedaling away on his Peloton bike, enjoying quality time with his family, or tending to his adorable but demanding Tibetan Terrier.
Dr. Susan Shiroma, a proud member of Dr. Jay’s team, complements his expertise with her own remarkable achievements. Born and raised in Honolulu, Dr. Shiroma’s journey in dentistry was shaped by her passion for caring for others and her love for crafting jewelry. A graduate of Punahou School, she excelled in academics and extracurricular activities, becoming a National Merit Scholar and participating in Air Riflery and the debate team.
Dr. Shiroma pursued her higher education at the University of the Pacific in Stockton, California, where she dedicated her time to philanthropic endeavors. Volunteering for Operation Smile, she organized supply drives and fundraisers to provide cleft lip surgeries to children in developing countries. She also visited local schools and homeless shelters, teaching children basic science through captivating chemistry experiments. Driven by her passion for helping others, Dr. Shiroma graduated summa cum laude with a biology degree in just three years.
Her journey continued at the University of the Pacific’s Arthur A. Dugoni School of Dentistry in San Francisco. There, she cherished the connections made with fellow Hawaiians, relishing in the opportunity to share stories and experiences. Graduating with honors, Dr. Shiroma returned to Hawaii, where she honed her skills through the Kokua Kalihi Valley advanced education in general dentistry program. Serving the Kalihi community, this residency program provided invaluable experience and insights.
Outside of her professional endeavors, Dr. Shiroma proudly serves as a Captain in the Hawaii Army National Guard, utilizing her dental skills to contribute to the well-being of the community. In her free time, she finds joy in spending quality moments with her loved ones, playing the piano, surfing, paddleboarding, hiking, and exploring new destinations.
Dr. Susan’s commitment to providing comfortable dental care that aligns with her patients’ unique goals is evident in her dedication and hard work.
